Getting up and running for bird watching again
We’ve outfitted the backyard for some more exciting bird watching.
After taking a hiatus this summer and leaving the feeders empty—I was once told that you shouldn’t feed the birds during the summer because food is plentiful and they should not become dependent on feeders—we purchased a new sunlower/assorted seed feeder and I fixed the feeding platform installed on our back fence.
At this point, we’ve got a thistle feeder, a tray for assorted foods, a sunflower/assorted seed feeder, a fence mounted tray, two cake feeders for square suet and nut cakes and two bird baths.
In the last few days, all we’ve seen were the neighborhood mob of house sparrows (La avia nostra), one female goldfinch, which discovered that we have thistle out again, and a couple of mourning doves. Big woop.
Our neighbor, with feeders hanging in every corner of their yard, have a more diverse assortment of birds, with chickadees, nuthatches and a black bird that could be a cow bird or a grackle. While drinking tea this morning, I must make myself content with watching their yard with my binoculars.
But wait! As a write this post, a black-capped chickadee just swooped in for some sunflower seed. There might be hope for our modest feed station yet…
