Painting the living room
The final painting stage of the kitchen/dining/living room color palette strategy is finished. This weekend I painted the living room a light, robin’s egg blue color and we have finally freed ourselves of the builders’ beige tones in the main living areas of our home.

I started on Friday evening with prepping the living room by moving the couch and area rug to the center of the room and covering them with a drop cloth. The smaller chairs, plants, coffee table and other assorted small items were placed in the dining room. Then I spent about an hour and a half cutting in from the ceilings and around the window, door and threshold trim with 1/2 inch angle brush. When that was finished, it was time to call it a night.
Early Saturday morning it was back to work after a quick breakfast. I cut in from the floor trim and then traced the previous evening’s steps because a second coat of paint was required. When that was done, I hit the small areas and the zones around the trim with a three inch roller with a medium nap of about 3/8 inch. The old plaster walls are somewhat bumpy and needed something that would get into the bumps and uneven surface. When that was finished, it was easy to go in with the large roller of the same nap and make short work of the large wall areas that were left.
Rather than watch the paint dry, Randye and I set off to Plum Island that afternoon for a leisurely bike ride and to do some bird watching. But between the overcast sky, the cold ocean breezes and the cover charge to get into the Federal Wildlife Reserve area, we decided to get some Thai takeout and catch a movie instead.
This Sunday morning it was final touch-ups to any areas missed by the rollers or patches that still had spots of the the dreadful builders’ beige showing through. Once that was done, while I was still on a roll—pun intended—I decided to do some touch-up work on the kitchen walls as well.
Here are some photos of the finished living room, and of Randye holding our first piece of real art.

Thanks, Roxie! It’s nice to have one’s work appreciated, as I’m sure you must know. Even better when it’s from strangers.
