Great Backyard Bird Count – Sunday results
A busy day today with visits from some new feathered friends. Here’s the rundown.
Northern Cardinal – 5
House Sparrow – 10
Dark-Eyed Junko – 4
Black-Capped Chickadee – 1
Blue Jay – 1
Mourning Doves – 5
It’s nice to see the little chickadee in the area, especially with the occasional unfriendly mob tactics used by the house sparrows.
This morning, I also fastened a small platform feeder that I built out on the back fence. I had to cut a way a couple of the top links so that it would site on top of the cross bar, and with the two u-shaped clamps I used, it now sits solidly on top of the fence. This is where we’ll put out berries, fruit and other unusual morsels needed to attract less common bird species.
To top the day off, we’ve discovered what looks like a small mole living in the yard. It’s a cute little sucker with a short tail and a gray, furry, chubby body. This morning, it was sifting through the fallen seeds at the bottom of the tree stump that we put food out on. It kept Bouche quite entertained as it skittered across the snow and jumped in and out of my foot prints. Unfortunately, one of the neighborhood cats discovered it as well and came by twice today to torment it by chasing and batting it around.
So now we’re on the lookout to keep our new friend safe—just so long as it’s not living in our basement.
