Think you can dig to China?

Published by at 10:15 pm under internet

Remember when you were young and dug around in your back yard? There was always some friend or your mother who said that if you dug deep enough, you’d be able to dig all the way to China. So you and your friends would all start digging and usually by around 2:00 p.m. you’d only be down a few feet and give up to find something more interesting and less strenuous to do.

According to this fun Google map application, anyone living on the American northeast seaboard, would not be able to dig to China. I gave the site a test run and was disappointed at where I ended up. It turns out that if I dug from where I grew up or from where we live now, I’d end up in Indian Ocean just southwest of the southwest corner of Australia. If it were possible to dig down far enough, I’d dig myself to a watery grave or I’d be fish food for some great white shark.

Just to be sure, I did a reverse dig from China and discovered that the only place to dig to China would be from Argentina or Chile. I wonder what their friends or mothers tell them?
