Paul starts a new job with Helium

Published by at 2:43 pm under family, internet

My time with CXO Media is at an end and I’ll be moving on.

No longer will I be making a dreadful early morning (crack of dawn) commute through the hell that is Rt. 128 to get to work. No more losing precious hours of my day to traffic.

A great opportunity has presented itself, in the form of helium.com. My role there will be as a senior content and community advocate where I will use my previous editorial and community experience to work with the site’s users. The company also brought me on for my online project and product management experience–and as folks who know startups will say, this will be highly valued.

If you’re curious about Helium, the easiest way to describe it would be to say it’s a hybrid combination of Wikipedia.org and About.com. What sets Helium apart from the pack is that users contribute whole articles to the site, and they also determine how important, useful and valuable the articles of their peers are. Essentially, this user-generated knowledge base that is also managed by the site’s vibrant user community.

Additionally, those who submit articles that are highly valued by their peers have the opportunity to earn revenue based on rank, traffic and other factors. Find out more here.

It’s a fascinating concept based on the development of online user communities and knowledge centers, and I think one that has a lot of potential–otherwise I never would have signed on.

So keep an eye on the site as it grows and becomes an online community juggernaut!

    Thanks, Malkie.

If I can simplify it, Helium is another take on an online community where people share information. This has been going on for years, but Helium is doing it with a different style.
