Gilding the lily: New accent lights in the kitchen

Published by at 8:58 pm under Home improvement

With the help of Randye’s grandparents, we were able to check off another item we had to leave out of the original kitchen plan, architectural accent lighting. For this, we purchased some rope lights at Lowe’s that go above the cabinets.

They were easy to install. Rather than screwing in plastic pieces meant to secure the rope lights and putting holes in the back of the crown molding, we secured them in with some duct tape. Some small strips placed every six to eight inches were enough to secure the lights around the perimeter atop the counters right behind the crown molding.

We installed a six-foot section above the small bank of cabinets left of the kitchen window to the dining room, and a 20-foot section above the larger bank of cabinets that go from the right side of the window around the back corner and over the refrigerator.

When these lights, the chimney wall-washers and the funky perimeter light on the range hood are on, they create a low-lit mood that is just downright sexy. Makes you want to dance and drink champagne with a special someone in the kitchen. Hmmmm, that gives me an idea…
