Randye tackles the chimney

Published by at 9:27 pm under The new kitchen

While I was out on a wild goose chase for wood filler that closely matched the color of our trim to fill in the nail holes, Randye was getting things done. After decades of exposure to dusty 2x4s and drywall, the exposed chimney was in need of some TLC. Wielding a scrub brush and a bucket, Randye went to town cleaning the chimney.

After an hour of scrubbing, with water and grit flying everywhere, the chimney is now on the road to recovery. By the end of the afternoon, the once-dismal looking stack of brick and mortar now has color, clarity and punch that will make it one of the main focal points in the new kitchen. And we have yet to put on the masonry seal.

And my goose chase was a complete failure. After calling 25 local hardware stores looking for a particular brand of wood filler, I asked Randye if she’d go talk to one of the guys I spoke on the phone with at Amesbury Industrial Supply in the center of town. She was in and out of there in ten minutes with a better brand of wood filler, and in the right color.  And who said if you want something done, do it yourself. Obviously, that person never met my wife.
