Kitchen – Week 7, day 4
So, Thursday was a rough day. The morning progressed uneventfully. Our gorgeous hardware started to get installed. Yay!

But shortly after lunch, the contractor decided he wanted to confirm the granite company’s measurements (a week after they took them). Well, better safe than sorry. But it was revealed that we’d likely have a 1/4″ gap at the edge near the refrigerator. So, I discussed our options through frantic calls to Paul, confusing discussions with our contractor and angry calls to with the granite company.
Long story short, Paul and I were going to have to shell out some extra money for a granite backsplash that we did not want in the first place. The granite company was willing to cut the overall cost, but we still were not pleased since A) this was their error B) we did not want a backsplash in the first place and C) this is the LAST slab of this granite they have (and can get), therefore if we didn’t use it for the backsplash, it would have been garbage material anyhow.
Later, my contractor came up with a possible other solution that was far more palatable to us and would require a lot less work from the granite company. (Basically instead of a backsplash all the way around, we’d only get a small piece of granite trim to fill the gap. Since the gap is hidden along side the fridge cabinet, this is the least obtrusive fix.) So Paul put a call in to discuss it, unfortunately they were gone for the day. So hopefully this is issue will be resolved today.
Meanwhile, the head of the contracting company swung buy to discuss the additional charges for all the extra column detailing that our foreman had so beautifully crafted. We knew his handiwork was above and beyond the scope of work, but hadn’t gotten a quote up front. (EEK!) So, his presence while I’m making all these granite-related calls was extra stressful because I feared what he would be soon telling me. Luckily, he is being quite fair in his charges. (PHEW!)
Lastly (!), while this was all happening, the town FINALLY sent a tree company out to properly maintain the large Sugar Maple tree out front. While we love the tree, it was a danger to society. (Well, at least it was a danger to my car! A branch had fallen out smashing my windshield and denting the hood a few weeks back.) But we were afraid they would just chop the whole thing down, despite it just needed a good pruning. So I had to keep an eye on that. (Meanwhile saws are running, limbs are crashing down and the chipper is roaring.) Luckily, the tree still stands! It’s just a few dozen limbs lighter.

Oh, and did I mention I WORK FROM HOME and actually needed to get some stuff done?
Oy! But bless Paul who did his best to handle what he could from his office . . . and then brightened the end of my day with this lovely surprise delivery.
