Reality slap on the water
It turns out, my suspicions were right. Ergometer times and actual on the water times are vastly different.
While rowing machines attempt to simulate actual water conditions, it’s not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. While rowing today, I was buoyed by yesterday’s erg score of 20:58.5 and was hoping to come close to that time for an approx. distance of 3 miles. (Remember 5,000 meters = 3.1 miles.)
No such luck. I think I was lucky to get about 2.5 miles, and my hopes were dashed upon the rocks that stick out into the river from the bottom end of Tyng Island on the Merrimack River. All I have is a nasty blister to show for it. Consequently, it’s back to the gym for “easy” erging and blister healing and then back on the water this Friday to see if I can churn some more distance into a 21-minute piece, or go faster for 3 miles.
