Kitchen – Day 4 – End of the 1st Week

Published by at 8:29 pm under The new kitchen

What a week! We have dust everywhere, and the place has the old house debris smell, comingled with freshly sawed wood and construction smell.

Thus far, we’ve uncovered some skeletons within this old house, including an old ice pick from the 20th century. It looks like we’re going to have to add another support column underneath the main house support beam that runs from front to back as there is some sag. We’ll probably jack that up an inch at the most to reduce wall cracking, but support the home down the road when we decide to remodel the upstairs. That’s in addition to another major support beam underneath the kitchen to avoid floor bounce and support of the kitchen appliances. (The current kitchen sags a bit in the middle.)

Getting ready to add the support columns:

We also have to sister some 2×8 joists to the existing 2×6 ceiling joists for two reasons. The first is to fit the duct-work from our range hood and pot-lights in the ceiling. The second is to get rid of the sag in the ceiling to support the room upstairs and give us a level ceiling. Unfortunately, that would throw off the ceiling heights between the dining room and kitchen–one would be an inch or two lower than the other. So, we have to lower the dining room ceiling to bring it to the same height as the kitchen ceiling so there is a seamless transition between the two. To do that, we’re looking at adding strapping to the existing dining room ceiling to bring that down a bit.

So, we’re dealing with a lot of structural issues we’d rather not deal with, but we’re getting them out of the way for future renovations. Oh, yes, this is just the beginning …

I also had to get the contractors to move the new back door a couple inches farther from the bulkhead today. They installed it a bit close to the bulkhead outside, and the bulkhead door would have been smacking right against the railing, which also would have been right against the door frame. Too tight all around. Luckily, after explaining my concerns, they were more than happy to fix it.

Today, they also started the holes for the support columns, as well as the frame for our little back porch, which will have stairs and enough room for the BBQ. Oh, so, important.

As the first week draws to a close, I’m going to buy the lads some beer. And why not? They earned it.
